Evaluation of "Bing"

Mon, 22 Jun 2009 12:00:00 CST – At the beginning of June, Microsoft launched a new search engine officially named “Bing”, (www.bing.com). The announcement generated a buzz in the first week and a half, with Bing overtaking www.yahoo.com as the second most popular search portal, (Stat Counter: http://gs.statcounter.com/#search_engine-ww-daily-20090529-20090604).

Granted Bing has a very long way to go to compete with Google’s dominate market share, but it is a very impressive start. Google holds 87.66% of the market. Bing currently holds 5.56%, with Yahoo trailing at 5.17%. The numbers for Bing, in the United States, are even higher. The question remains, on whether or not Microsoft’s new search engine has the staying power to compete with Google.

Similar to Google, the new search engine deliveries the traditional search results. However, Bing offers a list of related searches down the left-hand side bar. It also offers additional sub-categories to improve your search. Bing will also list your most recent search history, (this is a feature you can toggle on or off).

My favorite feature is a popup window that opens when you scroll your mouse over the search results. This box is loaded with site-specific information and details. For instance, when I searched for “Casey Designs” it lists my company website. When I place my mouse over my listing, a box pops up with a more detailed summary of my website services and provides additional internal web links to other pages. This information helps you learn more about a website, before leaving the search portal.

I highly recommend that you give www.bing.com a try. For mobile users, please browse www.m.bing.com. The interface is greatly improve over "Live", and the search results rival Google. If you want to compare the search results generated by google and bing side-by-side, then go to: http://bing-vs-google.com/.
